India blackout leaves 370 million in dark

NEW DELHI (AP) ? Northern India's power grid crashed Monday, halting hundreds of trains, forcing hospitals and airports to use backup generators and leaving 370 million people ? more than the population of the United States and Canada combined ? sweltering in the summer heat.

The blackout, one of the worst to hit India in a decade, highlighted the nation's inability to feed a growing hunger for energy as it strives to become a regional economic power.

The country's northern grid crashed about 2:30 a.m. because it could no longer keep up with the huge demand for power in the hot summer, officials in the state of Uttar Pradesh said. However, Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde said he was not sure exactly what caused the collapse and had formed a committee to investigate it.

The grid feeds the nation's breadbasket in Punjab, the war-wracked region of Kashmir, the burgeoning capital of New Delhi, the Dalai Lama's Himalayan headquarters in Dharmsala and the world's most populous state, the poverty stricken Uttar Pradesh.

By late morning, 60 percent of the power had been restored in the eight northern states affected by the outage and the rest was expected to be back on line by the afternoon, Shinde said. The grid was drawing power from the neighboring Eastern and Western grids as well as getting hydroelectric power from the neighboring mountain kingdom of Bhutan.

Without electricity, residents were roused from sleep when their fans and air conditioners stopped, and came out of their homes in New Delhi's sweltering heat as the entire city turned dark. Temperatures in the city were in the mid 30s (90s Fahrenheit) with 89 percent humidity. New Delhi's renowned Metro transit system, with 1.8 million daily riders, was forced to shut down for hours during the morning commute. Some trains across the northern region were stranded when their electric engines failed. Others were delayed by hours as they were hooked to diesel engines.

While the outage Monday was unique in its reach, its impact was softened by Indians' familiarity with almost daily power outages of varying duration. Hospitals and major businesses have generators that kick in when during power cuts, and upscale homes run on backup systems powered by truck batteries.

"This will obviously get worse," said Subhash Chawla, a 65-year-old retiree who took the Metro once power was restored. "Unless the Metro has a separate power supply, it will be chaos in the future."

The failure was the first time since 2001 that the northern grid had collapsed. But India's demand for electricity has soared since then as its economy has grown sharply. The outage was a reminder of the country's long road ahead in upgrading its infrastructure to meet its aspirations of being an economic superpower.

India's Central Electricity Authority reports power deficits of about 8 percent in recent months. But any connection to the grid remains a luxury for many. One-third of India's households do not even have electricity to power a light bulb, according to last year's census.

Transmission and distribution losses in some states are as much as 50 percent because of theft and connivance of employees in the power industry.

The power deficit was worsened by a weak monsoon that lowered hydroelectric generation and kept temperatures higher, further increasing electricity usage as people seek to cool off. Shivpal Singh Yadav, the power minister in the state of Uttar Pradesh, home to 200 million people, said that while demand during peak hours hits 11,000 megawatts, the state can only provide 9,000 megawatts.

Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation chief Avnish Awasthi blamed the grid collapse on states drawing more than their allotted power to meet the summer demand,

Earlier this month, angry crowds blocked traffic and clashed with police after blackouts in the Delhi suburb of Gurgaon that houses many high-rise apartment blocks and offices. With no power in some neighborhoods for more than 24 hours, people erected blockades that paralyzed traffic for several hours.

Design and construction businesses critical of Carbon Tax | Project ...

A survey conducted by Infolink.com.au reveals that the majority of architecture, building, construction and design businesses believe the Carbon Tax will not reduce carbon emissions in addition to current initiatives.

More than 1,000 businesses in the architecture, building, construction and design industries were surveyed about their opinions on this topical issue, of which 62% do not support the Australian Government?s Carbon Tax. Ninety percent indicated they were already taking action to reduce emissions.

?These businesses are already making an effort to reduce their impact on the environment and believe that the tax won?t cause a significant reduction in carbon emissions,? said Chris Mottreshead, account manager for Infolink.com.au. ?Many in the architecture, building, construction and design industries are concerned about the impact the Carbon Tax will have on Australian businesses.?

More than half of the respondents already use alternative energy sources for sustainability, however over half also stated they would not use alternative energy sources in the future due to the Carbon Tax.

Almost two in three businesses surveyed were concerned about greenhouse gas and emissions for the future, and more than half showed concern about climate change.

Comparison between industries:

• 70% of architecture businesses use alternative energy sources for sustainability as opposed to 54% of building and construction businesses.
• Over half of the architecture businesses do not believe the Carbon Tax will cause a reduction in carbon emissions as opposed to 74% of building and construction businesses.
• 84% of building and construction businesses are concerned about the impact the Carbon Tax will have on Australian businesses as opposed to 73% of architecture businesses.

Google?s automated car has gotten attention from a number of press outlets, and it?s been speculated that automation of car shipping facilities is just around the corner. Could automated driving technology be used to ship a car from door to door? No conclusive answer has been released as yet, and the legality of robotic cars on the roads will likely create a logistical issue with the automation of car shipping for the time being. Namely, automated cars are required to have drivers present in the event of malfunction. Therefore, there is no economic advantage to auto transport companies from installing auto-pilot functionality at this time.

In the future, however, a residential auto transport customer could conceivably send an automobile over a thousand-mile journey without a single human being having to get involved in the process. Imagine this: you are planning a long-distance trip. You plan to fly, and you?d like to have your car available since you will be staying at your destination for several months. You visit a web site, type in your source, destination, and pick-up and drop-off times. The next morning, a car carrier arrives at your driveway. The car carrier has no human driver; it is controlled by a computer that detects your house via GPS and rings your doorbell by remote control. Alternatively, the system might send a text message to your phone, notifying you that the auto transport will arrive in a few minutes to pick up your car.

Such a system might also allow you to authorize an auto transport to move your car onto its bed. You might provide the system with a single-use code, allowing the truck to take over control of your car and activate the ignition. You might simply watch from your bedroom window while your car drives itself up onto the truck?s bed, and the truck drives away. You might arrive at your destination just in time to watch the truck pull into the driveway, and watch your car drive itself back off. Technology for this type of application is not commercially available at the time of this writing, but it may be here sooner than you think. Technology continues to advance at an accelerated pace with each passing year, and it seems ideas that once appeared impossible become mainstream technologies in the blink of an eye.

Short-haul , auto transport might have some applications in metropolitan settings. Historically, auto transportation has required the use of trucks or trains, but this might not always be the case. You might, for example, be able to drive into town, pull up in front of the building where you work, and allow an auto transport system to park your car for you and bill your credit card for any charges incurred.

The auto transportation industry?s future is virtually unlimited, and the applications for this type of automation are endless. During peak traffic hours, for example, cars tend to form bottlenecks on city streets and highways. Auto transport trains might be utilized to reduce the load by allowing cars to be loaded onto a conveyor belt. This type of system might reduce the impact of fluctuations such as individual driver response time. Since a line of cars can only move as fast as the slowest car, any individual driver can effectively slow down the entire line of traffic. In an automated auto transport system, however, a computer controller could simultaneously control the movement of all cars via a single drive chain system. This would allow the line to move at faster speeds.

Will Kristen Stewart's infidelity derail 'Snow White,' 'Twilight'?

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - While Kristen Stewart has alienated "Twilight" fans by cheating on long-time boyfriend and co-star Robert Pattinson, experts say the brewing controversy could do more to boost their careers than damage them.

Stewart issued an apology this week when a photo of her canoodling with director Rupert Sanders surfaced so as to temper attention to the controversy, but in the 21st century sometimes all publicity really is good publicity.

"Twenty years ago or 30 years ago controversy was a career killer," Howard Bragman, veteran industry publicist and VP of Reputation.com, told TheWrap. "Now it can be career Viagra. We kind of embrace controversy."

For both actors, it was their real-life relationship, paralleled by their cinematic romance in the ?Twilight" films, that elevated them to the Hollywood A-list.

In four years, Stewart went from an indie darling to the star of a big-budget summer tentpole, Universal's "Snow White and the Huntsman." It was on that set where she met Sanders, the other crooner in this duet of infidelity.

Pattinson has since earned leading roles in films such as David Cronenberg's "Cosmopolis," and in a pair of indie films.

Though this controversy may only enhance their star power, her youthful indiscretion raises some serious questions for all of the characters involved.

The final "Twilight" film comes out in November, and there is its box office performance to think of.

In this last episode in the franchise, Stewart's Bella and Pattinson's Edward are now married with child, and Stewart has turned into a vampire.

Will viewers flock in the same droves to watch a romance that has been spoiled off screen?

For the most part, fans have defended the two stars, expressing incredulity but not anger.

"Although Kristen has made a statement and may have cheated on Rob I still believe the pics were photo shopped to manipulate the situation," tweeted @Twi_Hard247.

Still, there are skeptics.

"I think it could hurt it," BoxOffice.com editor-in-chief Phil Contrino told TheWrap Thursday. "The fact that they're together in real life created some of the appeal for its fans."

The lead-up to the film's opening will determine whether there is an impact.

In the past, fans fawned over the 20-something lovebirds. Now that Pattinson has moved out of their shared house, how the former couple behave in public could go a long way toward dictating popular response.

They will be booked for endless media appearances, from magazine covers to television shows to press junkets to international premieres.

"The only sticky point will be the press tour," Bragman said. "A lot of that will be determined by how she and Robert are interacting at that point. They will either be ?we love each other and decided to split up' or ?we learned from this and learned what's important.'"

Summit has declined to comment on the subject, as a spokesperson noted that this is a personal issue and has nothing to do with the film.

If there is no impact on "Twilight," what of the sequel to "Snow White and the Huntsman," which Sanders is set to direct and in which Stewart is to star?

Universal placed a big bet on Sanders, an unproven feature director who had a great reputation in the commercial world. He delivered with a film that grossed $381 million at the global box office and earned itself a sequel.

Liberty Ross, Sanders' wife, has entered the fray by posting a photo on Instagram of an animated Snow White curled over, crying and holding a bottle. A caption reads,

"Not so pretty or pure after all..."

Though Ross may try to bar Sanders from directing Stewart, the success of the first film means Sanders is expected to be back for the second one.

Universal has issued no comment and most observers believe there is no reason to pull Sanders off the film. A spokesperson for Universal did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Detroit Teens Gain Green Jobs Skills, Improve Parks | Earthtechling

With both high unemployment statistics and a whole lot of green thinking going on these days, Detroit is looking for ways to give its youth green job skills that will provide an edge in securing employment. Toward that end, Detroit-area powerhouse employer Johnson Controls has teamed up with the Student Conservation Association and The Greening of Detroit on a summer environmental jobs program for local youth, now in its fifth year.

The program, known as the Conservation Leadership Corps (CLC), was designed to promote environmental conservation and the development of professional leadership and job skills, while students complete fundamental environmental projects in local community parks and farms.

This summer, 80 students will work with 17 crew leaders to improve ecosystems and facilities in Detroit?s Rouge Park, Belle Isle Park, Eliza Howell Park, Brightmoor neighborhood, D-Town Farm and Singing Tree Farm. Student crews will complete projects involving native planting, new trail development and maintenance, outdoor classroom construction, invasive plant species removal, acreage expansion, and general operations and maintenance. They also will receive job-readiness skills instruction, including help with resume writing, interview skills and personal finance management.

Over the course of this six-week program, Johnson Controls employees will get their hands dirty in the course of joining the student crews in their park projects. In a corresponding fashion, students will also get a chance to clean up, don office garb, and join Johnson Controls employees for a professional development day ? hosted by the company?s Automotive Experience business in Plymouth, Mich. ? where they will learn about the importance of sustainability, energy efficiency and renewable resources in the fields of automotive interior design and engineering, building efficiency and hybrid battery technology.

Student participants in the CLC this year were selected from more than 550 applicants based on their successful completion of a three-step, two-month tryout process. Over the course of that tryout process, candidates were assessed on their work ethic, leadership ability, civic engagement and commitment to the environment.
