Martin Fleischmann dies at 85; claimed cold-fusion success

Martin Fleischmann and Stanley Pons thought they were going to change the energy world forever.

On March 23, 1989, they announced at a news conference at the University of Utah that they had discovered a tabletop process for producing nuclear fusion at room temperatures. This so-called cold fusion, they said, would provide a clean, renewable, limitless source of cheap energy that could free the United States from its dependence on foreign oil.

The pair garnered headlines around the world, and literally hundreds of scientists, both professional and amateur, tried to replicate what appeared to be a simple process.

But no one could. The mainstream scientific world echoed the conclusion of physicist Steven E. Koonin of Caltech, who called the initial report the result of "the incompetence and delusion of Pons and Fleischmann."

After attempting ? and failing ? to reproduce the results for several years, Fleischmann retired to his home in England, where he died Aug. 3 of Parkinson's disease and diabetes, his son Nicholas told the Associated Press. He was 85.

Nuclear power is now produced in plants powered by fission, in which atoms of uranium or plutonium decay naturally to produce heat that drives steam generators. Producing energy through nuclear fusion, the same process that occurs in the sun, remains an elusive goal.

In fusion, two or more atomic nuclei join to produce a heavier element, releasing energy in the process. In most research efforts, physicists have tried to fuse an atom of deuterium ? heavy hydrogen ? with one of tritium to produce helium. Because deuterium and tritium are abundant in the world's oceans, albeit at low levels, fusion could provide a limitless source of energy.

But forcing the nuclei to combine requires high temperatures and pressures, and experimental fusion reactors typically produce less energy than is required to fuse the atoms.

Pons and Fleischmann thought they had found a much simpler way, using what chemists call electrolysis. It's simple in concept: Two electrodes are immersed in a conductive solution and electricity is passed between them. In a simple electrolysis cell, the reaction splits water to form hydrogen at one electrode and oxygen at the other.

The team became convinced that if they used the right electrodes and immersed them in deuterium oxide instead of plain water, the freed deuterium atoms would become packed into an electrode, where they would fuse. At the news conference, they reported that their simple cells released more energy than was put into them ? in other words, that fusion had occurred.

Others immediately saw problems. If deuterium-deuterium fusion was occurring, the process should release energetic neutrons. Nobody was ever able to detect such neutrons. The process should also produce helium by the fusing of the deuterium atoms. The team was never able to show excess quantities of helium beyond what was in the background air.

And, perhaps most important, other scientists concluded that Fleischmann and Pons had botched their energy calculations and that no excess energy was being produced.

The men always claimed that they were rushed into a premature announcement of their findings, without scientific publication, by University of Utah President Chase N. Peterson, in large part because a rival team at Brigham Young University was working on a similar project. Peterson became a cheerleader for their work and helped persuade the Utah Legislature to grant them $5 million for research. The university spent more than $1 million in legal fees to patent the research.

But within two years, cold fusion was dismissed by the scientific community, Peterson had resigned and Pons and Fleischmann had left Salt Lake City for France, where they had less notoriety.

They continued their work at Techova Corp., a subsidiary of Toyota, with more than $30 million in research funds but never replicated their earlier findings. They parted ways under less than amiable conditions in 1995 when Fleischmann retired.

Pons has essentially disappeared from sight.

A near cult has arisen around cold fusion, and many amateur scientists still claim to have produced the effect. Their research has been dismissed by the scientific community.

Martin Fleischmann was born March 29, 1927, in Karlovy Vary, Czechoslovakia, and moved to England in 1938 with his family to escape the Nazis. He received a doctorate in chemistry from Imperial College London in 1950, the year he married Sheila Flinn, a painter and potter. The couple had three children.

He taught at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne and the University of Southampton, where he was a respected electrochemist. He played a crucial role in the development of a spectroscopy technique called surface enhanced Raman scattering and was the developer of the ultramicroelectrode.

When he retired from teaching in 1983, he moved to Salt Lake City to work with his former student, Pons.

UNC reviewing possible post of Peppers' transcript

North Carolina is investigating how what appears to be a transcript for former football star Julius Peppers surfaced on the university's website.

In a statement Monday, the school said it has removed the link and that it wouldn't discuss confidential student information covered by federal privacy laws. The school didn't confirm the authenticity of the transcript, which lists Peppers' name at the top.

The link, which surfaced late Sunday, showed Peppers received some of his highest grades in classes in the Department of African and Afro-American Studies (AFAM). A school investigation has since found fraud and poor oversight in 54 AFAM classes between summer 2007 and summer 2011, with football players making up more than a third of the enrollments and student-athletes making up 58 percent of the overall enrollments in those suspect classes.

Nine of the 10 classes in which Peppers earned a B-plus, B or B-minus came in the AFAM department, according to the possible transcript.

Peppers also played two seasons for the men's basketball team under Bill Guthridge and Matt Doherty, serving as a reserve on the team that reached the Final Four in 2000.

Peppers was the No. 2 pick of the Carolina Panthers in the 2002 NFL Draft and spent eight seasons there. He signed with the Chicago Bears in 2010 and is a six-time Pro Bowl defensive end.

The school's investigation of the AFAM department began as an offshoot of the NCAA investigation into improper benefits and academic misconduct in the football program, which began in June 2010. That probe ultimately led to the firing of coach Butch Davis last July, though Davis wasn't cited for a violation when the NCAA penalized the program in March with a one-year bowl ban and 15 scholarship reductions over three years.

Davis, who has denied knowledge of wrongdoing, has said he never steered players to take AFAM classes nor met the department chairman ? whose name was linked to the majority of the suspect classes listed in the school's AFAM probe.

The NCAA investigation also led to the resignation of longtime athletic director Dick Baddour. The school hired Tulsa's Bubba Cunningham as athletic director and Southern Mississippi's Larry Fedora as football coach.

The UNC board of governors ? who oversee the 17-campus public university system ? has appointed a four-member panel to review the school's investigation of the AFAM irregularities.

ScienceDaily (Aug. 13, 2012) ? Sperm swim, lung cells sweep mucus away, and the cells in the female Fallopian tube move eggs from the ovary to the uterus. Underlying these phenomena are flagella -- slender, hair-like structures extending from the surface of the cells, that bend, beat or wave rhythmically. In the latest issue of the journal Developmental Cell, scientists from the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ci?ncia (IGC), in Portugal, have dissected how sperm cells of the fruit fly build their flagella. These findings pave the way to further understand the molecules and processes that may trigger a variety of human diseases and disorders, including infertility, respiratory problems and hydrocephaly, known to be associated with defects in flagellar movements.

Using electron microscopy -- which allows scientists to see structures that are 3,500 times thinner than a strand of human hair -- Monica Bettencourt-Dias and her team described, for the first time ever, the different steps involved in making a motile flagellum in sperm cells of the fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster). The team was particularly interested in when and how a critical protein structure -- called the central microtubule pair -- is formed. Without the central microtubule pair complex, the flagellum is unable to move in a coordinated fashion.

Zita Carvalho-Santos, a post-doctoral researcher, explains what they found, "We looked at a particular fly gene, called Bld10, and found that flies in which this gene is inactive produce sperm with incomplete flagella because, it seems, the Bld10 protein is essential for the central microtubule pair to form. As a result, mutant sperm are immobile, and male flies are infertile. Humans have an analogous gene that produces a similar protein, which has been linked to male infertility."

The researchers built on work carried out in the 1970s that described the process of spermatogenesis in the fruit fly, to produce the most detailed description of flagellar biogenesis in an animal cell to date.

Monica Bettencourt-Dias adds, "We found that the process is much more dynamic than we had anticipated: first a single microtubule chain forms, and then the second. Our work has provided several long-awaited answers, but also raised other questions, that studying sperm formation in Drosophila may answer."

This study was carried out in collaboration with researchers at the Instituto de Tecnologia Qu?mica e Biol?gica (ITQB, Portugal). Zita Carvalho-Santos and Pedro Machado (IGC) contributed equally to the work. This research was funded by the Funda??o para a Ci?ncia e Tecnologia (FCT, Portugal) and the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO). Preparing for the family party ? Missing People, Keeping Busy ...

This morning I?m at my mom?s. My sister and her boys are here, two of the three, as the third is home working and with his dad and his family who are visiting from Canada. My sister-in-law and nephew and his French Canadian Grandmama are here. My brother is home sick. My children are away for the weekend with their dad and stepmom and a group of friends. My mom is here, fully in her home, hosting us all. Her friend is here, helping her set up furniture and label coolers and thermoses of drinks. Soon my aunts and uncles and a bunch of cousins from several generations will arrive. We?ll have Beef on Wick sandwiches, a local favorite, a salad I made of produce we collected yesterday at the Farmer?s Market in town where the parents of the best friends of both my sister and me happened to be, and from a farm stand outside of town run by one of our high school classmates, baked ziti made by my sister while I made the salad, a cake for my mom?s cousin from Texas who will be 80 this winter, and lots of food the relatives will bring. This is how my family gets together. My mom lives in the house where we grew up. The bedrooms where we sleep when we come home are the ones we slept in as kids. The furniture is mostly the same, though now there are more beds to accommodate the partners and grandkids. The house and yard are pristine. I did not inherit, nor learn that from my family. In that way I am a black sheep, and also keep trying to reform.

Last night after a dinner of grilled meat and many local vegetables, my sister and I went for a long walk down the road past the neighborhood where we lived as small kids. We talked and walked until nearly dark. When we got home, we sat at the table and ate ice cream with peaches and blueberries. My two year old nephew sat on my mom?s lap eating a gigantic cookie and told us a tall tale about driving his ATV up the steep and bumpy road, where he had driven the coon up a tree and scared off a bear. I told him about the cows escaped from their pasture in Ashfield, about the moose and bears who tore apart the farmer?s fences and bothered the hogs and loosed the cows, who meandered down the road to poop in our yard and drink from our pond. I?m not sure he was impressed. He went on to tell us more Adirondack tales. We wondered which other parts of his dad he might take on, besides the love of ATVs, coons, dogs, the outdoors, and radical adventure. He managed to finish the very large cookie he took instead of peaches and ice cream, then climbed off the lap of Grandmama Pearce (his name for my mom, spoken in his French Canadian way) to play with his dad?s old toys, while some of us stayed up a little late watching diving on the Olympics and others of us drifted off to bed.

My sister has just gone to her van to get the charger for her iphone. The door slams and makes the sound it has always made, one of those aluminum insulated doors hung tightly in its? frame, to keep out cold air and snow, and I remember all the times that door blew open and the cold came in, and think perhaps that is why we always slam it shut. Without the slam it might blow open, something might come in or go out uninvited or unnoticed until too late.

I am a person attached to place. I wonder at people who move and move and move. Growing up I agonized when we left the home where we had lived from my early childhood until age eleven to move to this one. It took me years to call this place ?home. In my adult life, I can only barely imagine selling the house I?ve lived in for nearly twenty years, even as I struggle to maintain it. I love knowing the sound of the door to my brother?s bedroom banging in the breeze. Even as it irritates me, it has irritated me that way before. This house breathes that way. It has cross ventilation. The hallways are wide, and as I walk down the one on the second floor from the staircase to my old bedroom, I imagine that if we could cut that hallway in half and lay the two sections side by side, they would make a room as big as my kids? bedrooms in Somerville, the hall here is that big, our house in Somerville is that tight, not a lot of hallway or entrance space, no finished basement or office or family room or two car garage or storage barn with loft, no acre of grass, six acres of field, or nearly twenty of woods to explore..all these are luxuries of my growing up I have foregone as an adult in favor of living in a crowded, expensive city far away. Some of this we?ve got in our place in the country which we share with friends, the yard, the acreage, the woods, but mostly, our life is very different from the one I left behind here nearly thirty years ago, when I went to college at seventeen, as my boy is soon to do, coming back to the state where I grew up to start his adult life.

Time to help again with the party. I wonder what stories I?ll here for the first time, which repeats, what family connections we?ll all feel, folks from Western Canada to Texas to Massachusetts to New York gathered in my mom?s back yard for a meal and conversation, games if we choose, maybe a walk for some. It?s good to be home. We can never have everyone here. Even when I was a kid I knew some were not with us when we?d get together. Midlife, it seems there are as many missing as there are here. Somehow that?s ok today. I don?t feel sad, just thoughtful.

The expanded pooper-scooper law, adopted this April, requires residents to clean up the waste of cats, horses, swine, donkeys and goats in addition to dogs.

The East End Livestock and Horseman?s Association is bristling at the regulation, and not just because of the logistical possibility of having to follow after their horses on trails with wheelbarrows and shovels.

The group?s president, Samantha Perry, told the Town Board last Tuesday that she?s concerned about the slippery slope produced when animals that have always been considered livestock are suddenly legally classified as domestic pets.

She said if laws begin to define horses as pets instead of livestock, it could limit the amount of USDA funding for horse diseases, could change the tax classifications for people who have working horses on their farms, could change animal cruelty laws and could limit federal and state funding for working animals.

?Southold is a small town, but this sets the tone for bigger areas,? she said.

Town Supervisor Scott Russell said he?s not sure how classifying horses as pets could be detrimental to their owners. He added that the pooper-scooper law only governs horse owners? activities on publicly owned lands, not in agricultural districts, where the legal definitions of horses as livestock are set by state Agriculture and Markets law.

Ms. Perry said in an interview later that she?s concerned about safety issues associated with cleaning up after horses on trails, including extra dismounts, the possibility that horses will run away while their riders are cleaning up after them, not to mention the sheer weight of their waste and the utensils needed to pick it up.

She said more than 80 percent of horse manure is water, causing the manure to break down significantly just one day after it lands on the trail. She added that horses also evacuate while walking, making it difficult for riders to know when there?s a steaming horse pile in their wake.

Mr. Russell has agreed to meet with horse owners to iron out potential changes to the language in the law.

?We didn?t pass this legislation because we perceived a problem,? he said. ?It wasn?t because we thought we had a bunch of irresponsible horse owners running around.?
