MassBytes: Fate Filled Food by Eden Riche

Self-proclaimed foodie, maybe? If you know me, I think not. Good luck carrying a conversation with me that does not revolve around food. If you?re veering off subject, I?ll usually draw you back in with a quick ?What are you thinking for dinner?? or ?What?s your favorite food?? I?m just that person. Annoying probably but I?m just hungry for information. I?m the type of person that has to order last at a restaurant because I?d hate to have order envy. Plus I just love hearing what food combinations people come up with. Meal and menu planning is my favorite. I plan my families? menu like a short order gourmet cook. Growing food, cooking food, eating food, drinking wine, champagne, beer, spirits, cocktails, well you get it, the two go hand in hand. Forming a bond with food has been easy; figuring out what to do with that bond has been rough.

Flipping through restaurants for years, trying to find a ?real? job; I wasn?t convinced I was meant to leave the industry. But you know, I had to grow up, because that?s just what people do. For some reason it?s just not acceptable that working in a restaurant is your ?real? career. Why is that? I mean it certainly feels like real work. Listening to people bitch, running around like a chicken with your head cut off, giving and receiving orders, and exchanging money. Why is that not a real job? It?s just an internal voice with me though, that tells me this life was not meant for me.

Off I went to work in Human Resources. That is grown up right? Fortunately though, that path led me to some ideal destinations. I eventually landed at a premier catering company. I worked there as a manager, admiring and always learning more about the food production side. I just loved being around it all. Everything that goes into the operation is basically flawless right down to the last detail. The food is as pretty as it is delicious, and the staff that serves it, does it with precision. Here I learned what it takes to make it all happen. Behind the scenes at an event is like a fine tuned circus and it speaks volumes about all the hard work taking place in this industry.

As a purist and realist at heart though, I find myself drawn to the written word to unearth the errors of the food industry. Somewhere along the way, food got lost. It has turned into, well not food. There are ?drugs? in our food and we?re relying on The Food and Drug Administration to approve things for our health. I?m just not sure I?m willing to go to them for my information anymore. I want to learn more, on my own and share it with you. Bring it back to basics. Find the real food out there made from real ingredients. It?s not like I care what you eat. Ding dongs are fine but does there need to be dyes, preservatives and a bunch of other artificial shit in it? If we find the alternative and buy that, won?t they have to respond? Let?s bring human food back. I?m sick of being a lab rat.- Submitted by Eden Riche
