On Wednesday morning, I dropped by the building at OSU, Ballard Extension Hall, where my daughter Pam works so I could deliver a pair of tickets to that night?s Corvallis Knights baseball game.
I had my dog Jewel with me, so before bringing her inside I checked the door for any sign that might let me know if that would not be OK. Here?s what I found:
You?ll notice that ?dogs and pets? are not allowed. Dogs and pets? Isn?t that kind of like saying, ?guns and rifles,? or ?shirts and clothing,? or ?computers and MacBooks??
I mean, I love Jewel a ton, but I acknowledge that as a dog, she is a pet ? not, like, my sister or daughter.
Rollerblades and skates is similarly redundant (and Rollerblades is actually a brand name, btw; the generic term is inline skates).
And why can?t you bring a skateboard inside? What if you?ve ridden to class? Where are you supposed to put your board?
Topping everything off, you?ll note the sign carries the old, ridiculous ?manhole cover? logo for OSU.
The whole experience of reading the sign was so aggravating I felt like firing up a cigarette right there, even though I don?t smoke. OK, it wasn?t really all that aggravating, but the sign maker definitely could?ve used an editor ? which, of course, I am.
And now, today?s Catch of the Day, No. 23, a mid-1960s Jim Fregosi model of the Spalding brand. Fregosi was a solid player in his own right, but this time of year ? around the July 31 trade deadline ? he tends to get mentioned in a discussion of one-sided deals because the Angels swapped him to the Mets for a young Nolan Ryan.
Here?s the glove, purchased for $2 at the Arc thrift store in Corvallis:
